Guide: WHOIS Lookup
Topics in this category: WHOIS, DNS, registration checks
What is a WHOIS lookup?
A WHOIS lookup queries registration databases for a domain name. Results typically include the registrar, important dates (created, updated, expires), status codes, and the domain’s authoritative nameservers.
Many registrars offer privacy or proxy services, so owner contact fields may show a privacy service instead of a person’s details. This is normal and compliant with registry policies.
Use WHOIS data for due diligence before buying a domain, verifying DNS cutover, or documenting ownership during security reviews. Always treat WHOIS as public reference data, not legal proof on its own.
SEO and operations use cases
SEO teams use WHOIS to confirm expiry dates (avoid accidental lapses), check nameserver consistency during migrations, and spot stale or parked configurations.
When this tool is fully connected to a live WHOIS API, you will be able to run checks without leaving the browser. Until then, use your registrar’s WHOIS page or ICANN Lookup for authoritative results.
